Shivlinga is one of the most photogenic mountain of India. It often offers tantalising pyramical views – be it sunrise, day light or sunset views. Often nicknamed as Matterhorn of India. Shivling falls in Gangotri glacieres. Its Base Camp is established in Tapovan which is often visited by many trekkers because Tapovan offers an ampitheatrical views of peaks of Kedardome, Bhagirathi Khrchakund etc. We trek through Gangotri Temple and Gaumukh, the source of river Ganga. On this trekking trail we come across many Indian pilgrims which gives us an opportunity to know about the highest respect that pilgrims have for this sacred river Ganga. Shivling offers many routes from very technical to less technical. The traditonal route is from west side of Shivling.
Gangotri : The shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3200 m surrounded by deodars and pines. The original temple was constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. Every year people from all around the world visit this shrine. A number of ashrams and dharamshalas are located on the other side of the river. It is believed that Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva on a slab of rock "Bhagirath Shila" situated near the temple. Submerged in the river there is a natural Shivling where, according to mythology, Lord Shiva sat when he received the Goddess Ganga in his matted locks. A days trek takes one to Gomukh, the source of the mighty Ganges.
Gomukh : The Gomukh glacier is the source of Bhagirathi (Ganges) and is held in high esteem by the devout who collect its holy water for religious ceremonies, and bathe in the icy waters with a hope of cleansing their souls!
Tapovan : Tapovan is an ideal location for the tourists looking for peace and adventure. Located at an altitude of 4463m / 14640ft above sea level, Tapovan acts as a base camp for Shivlinga peak climbing expeditions in the Garhwal Himalayas. The word Shivling literally refers “the phallus of Lord Shiva”. Mt. Shivling is
among the most stunning peaks of Garhwal, Uttarakhand of India. The mountain
rises as a absolute pyramid above the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. Its amazing
form is often compared to that of “Matterhorn peak”. The mountain is well
defined by steep rock faces on all sides; besides the west flank which is
moderate enough slope for snow accumulation.
Shivling is twin-summated mountain with the northeast summit slightly higher
than the southwest summit. Gaumukh, a holy site of Hindus is source of
Bhagirathi River. Tapavan meadows lie between Shivling and Gaumukh.
Since its first ascent on June 3, 1974, at least ten other routes have been
identified to the summit which used all major ridges and most major faces of the
mountain. Though it is not of great elevation, peak is dramatically rocky and
difficult to climb that makes it a famed prize for mountaineers.
